During 2020, the ASFA Secretariat supported the CECAF-PESCAO project by compiling an inventory of marine fisheries research produced in nine countries (Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Spain). A search methodology was agreed with the CECAF project team, with support from the EAF-Nansen Programme to identify relevant marine fisheries research. Further parameters, including publication date and author affiliation, were defined in order to conduct systematic and repeatable searches. In the first stage, online searches were conducted using four sources (ASFA, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Scopus). The second stage involved searching local and nationally held collections (library catalogues, institutional websites or repositories) to identify further references. The results from these searches were then combined to produce an inventory of 2 411 unique references. A bibliometric analysis was then conducted on the inventory which revealed intensive publishing activity and strong collaboration across the region, however publishing in predatory journals and difficulty in locating grey literature on online sources were areas where further work is needed to ensure research produced in the area reaches a wide audience. A detailed analysis of research published by authors affiliated to Senegalese institutions was conducted which revealed a significant gender imbalance of authors (only 13 percent of authors identified in the study were female). Recommendations included in this report are to expand the inventory and analysis to other CECAF member countries and to take steps to ensure the grey literature produced by authors from the CECAF region is indexed by online sources.

The FAO/CECAF Working Group on the assessment of demersal resources in the Northern CECAF zone was held in Nouakchott, Mauritania from 2 to 10 December 2019. The general aim of the Working Group is to contribute to the improved management of demersal resources in Northwest Africa through the assessment of the state of the stocks and fisheries in order to ensure a sustainable use of these resources for the benefit of coastal countries. Analysis of fisheries resources are presented under four subgroups: hake, other demersal fish, shrimp, and cephalopods. The 2019 Working Group meeting analyzed a total of 27 stocks and/or groups of species. The meeting was financed by the EAF-Nansen Programme and the European Commission. The meeting was held at the Hotel Wissal in Nouakchott, and was organized with local support from the Institut Mauritanien de Recherches Océanographiques et de Pêches (IMROP).

This summary provides the preliminary results, not yet validated by the Scientific Sub-Committee (SSC) of the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF), of the nineteenth meeting of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa held in Casablanca, Morocco, 8-13 July 2019. The overall objective of the Working Group is to assess the state of the small pelagic resources in Northwest Africa and make recommendations on fisheries management and exploitation options aimed at ensuring optimal and sustainable use of small pelagic fish resources for the benefit of coastal countries. The first day was dedicated to planning the 2019 R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen survey in the region and to review progress of research work under the EAF-Nansen Programme Science plan, that uses the data collected in these surveys to address research questions of importance to the Working Group.
