GFFA Side Event: CFS Water and Climate Recommendations for Food Security and Nutrition

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) promotes a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach toward global policy convergence, including its work on climate change and water for food security and nutrition. The discussion will emphasize that water is the primary medium through which we will feel the effects of climate change. Indeed, climate change, resulting in extreme weather events, is increasingly jeopardizing water availability and accessibility, and poses serious threats to a secure global food supply. Water of sufficient quantity and quality is essential for agricultural production and for the preparation and processing of food. Irrigated agriculture accounts for 70 percent of all water withdrawals globally (surface and groundwater).

The discussion, also building on the conclusions of GFFA 2017, will seek answers to the questions: With what policies and innovations can the world ensure food and nutrition security, given increasingly scarce water resources and climate change? How can the traformation of food systems make the agricultural sector more climate-resilient? How can we improve the efficiency, and diversify the sources, of water use in agriculture to enhance climate change mitigation and adaptation? The event will also serve to monitor the impact of two sets of policy recommendations on water and climate change for food security and nutrition of the CFS.
