Committee on World Food Security

At the Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015, world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs will guide development policy, financing and action for the years leading up to 2030. They are universal and apply to all countries and are interconnected. Progress on one goal will affect others.

The Second Sustainable Development Goal, “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”, calls for collective, inclusive and multidisciplinary action to address the complex root-causes of hunger and malnutrition.
The implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is driven by governments, with the support of all stakeholders, and progress will be reviewed through an inclusive process at national, regional and global levels, converging to the High Level political Forum (HLPF) annual meetings.

As the foremost inclusive platform for all food security and nutrition stakeholders to work together towards greater policy coordination and convergence to ensure food security and nutrition for all, CFS can play an important role, and it has committed to putting the Sustainable Development Goals at the center of its work until 2030.

CFS contributes to the global follow-up and review process by providing space in its Plenary for global thematic reviews of progress as well as for governments and stakeholders to learn from one another based on the Voluntary National Reports to the HLPF in NY. The Committee’s integrated policy products on cross-cutting issues are designed in a way that supports country-led implementation of the SDGs.

The Committee also contributes annually to the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) global follow-up and review.
