Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

Celebrating the International Day for Biodiversity and the vital role of genetic resources in sustainable development

22/05/2025

On this the International Day for Biodiversity, we celebrate the richness of life on Earth – from ecosystems and species to genetic resources that form the foundation of our food systems, health, and well-being.

Under the theme "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development", this year’s International Day for Biodiversity calls for an inclusive and holistic approach to development that recognizes the intrinsic value of biodiversity and the need to protect it for current and future generations.

Genetic diversity – whether in crops, livestock, forest species, or aquatic species – are essential for adapting to a changing climate, ensuring food and nutrition security, and supporting resilient livelihoods. The conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from them, are crucial to achieving the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture plays a pivotal role in supporting these efforts. As the only international body specifically dedicated to biodiversity for food and agriculture, the Commission provides a global forum where countries come together to develop policies, guidelines, and strategies for the sustainable management of genetic resources.  Its work spans the entire spectrum of biodiversity, including from advancing the global policy on the interface of biodiversity and agriculture, highlighting the importance of Indigenous and traditional knowledge in conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and enhancing national capacities.

Through its guidance and coordination, the Commission assists countries in integrating biodiversity goals into national agricultural strategies, ensuring that the use of genetic resources contributes to, rather than undermine, environmental sustainability. It supports global frameworks that address interlinked challenges – such as climate change adaptation and land degradation – to improve resilience in agrifood systems and food security while recognizing the intricate dependencies of sustainable development and ecosystem services.

“Biodiversity for food and agriculture is not just about conservation; it is about ensuring that humanity can continue to thrive,” said Manoela Pessoa de Miranda, Secretary to the Commission. “On this International Day for Biodiversity, let us all renew our commitment to safeguard the diversity that underpins our food systems, strengthens resilience to climate change, and supports sustainable development.”

Every action counts – from protecting natural habitats to supporting Indigenous Peoples and smallholder farmers and fishers, to reducing waste and supporting biodiversity-friendly policies. The Commission reminds us that by working together, we can build a future where we all live in harmony with Nature and sustainable development.
