Upcoming webinar on “Establishing and scaling up breeding programmes in challenging environments”

26/11/2024

Thursday, 5 December 2024 14:00-15:30 UTC+1 (Paris time).

This webinar aims to report the literature review and interviews carried out by a group composed of researchers from INRAE, Idele (France) and BOKU (Austria) to write a section on how to scale up breeding programmes in challenging environments for FAO’s third report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
We shed light on some successes and failures across countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. We analyzed 17 case studies by investigating stakeholders’ motivations, institutional and financial support, and breeders’ organisation and breeding strategies. We identified levers to develop livestock breeding programmes under challenging conditions (harsh environments, difficult market access…), targeting specifically smallholder farms in low-input and extensive systems.

This work offers valuable insights into the factors shaping the outcomes of breeding programmes, paving the way for potential success stories.

You will get the opportunity to discuss with us about our analysis and bring in your own ideas on this topic.
