Managing climate risks through social protection

Released: March 2022 - 3 h
Using an illustrative scenario, the course will guide you through the different ways in which social protection can contribute to inclusive climate risk management.

Assessing uncertainties in the national greenhouse gas inventory: a focus on land use

Released: March 2022 - 2 h 45 m
Under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) there is a mandatory requirement for all countries party to the Paris Agreement to estimate and report on uncertainty in their National Greenhouse Gas inventories. This course helps strengthen institutional and technical capacity in national entities to allow them to meet this requirement and produce reliable data.

Understanding RIMA – An introduction to the Resilience Index Measurement and Analysis

Released: October 2021 - 50 min
This course provides an overview of the Resilience Index Measurement and Analysis (RIMA), a methodology that enables a rigorous analysis of how households cope with shocks and stressors.

Preparing a greenhouse gas inventory under the Enhanced Transparency Framework

Released: October 2020 - 1 h 30
This course introduces basic concepts on Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV), UNFCCC reporting requirements and the Enhanced transparency framework (ETF). It provides an overview of how to set up a National greenhouse gas inventory (NGHGI), looking at its cycle, main elements and principles, and the implications of the ETF.

Forests and transparency under the Paris Agreement

Released: June 2020 - 1 h 30
The objective of this course is to learn about the Enhanced Transparency Framework (EFT) under the Paris Agreement. It will be useful to those wishing to understand the importance of forest-related data collection, analysis and dissemination in meeting the Enhanced Transparency Framework requirements.

Climate-smart fisheries and aquaculture

Released: June 2020 - 1 h 30
This course has been designed to support the inclusion of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) approaches in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. It provides technical knowledge on these concepts and examines how implementation of CSA practices can enhance mitigation and adaptation to climate change in the sector.

Climate-smart forestry

Released: June 2020 - 2 h 15
This course explores the role of forests and trees in Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA). It takes into consideration the ecosystem services and goods that forests provide, and the importance of forests for the food security of forest-dependent people. It explores the complex relationship between climate change and forests, and how adaptation and mitigation measures can benefit forests, forest-dependent people, and global climate change. The synergies and trade-offs involved in climate-smart forest management are also considered.

Climate change adaptation and mitigation in fisheries and aquaculture

Released: June 2020 - 2 h
This course provides an overview of adaptation and mitigation strategies that can be implemented in response to climate change impacts on the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Estimating GHG emissions and carbon sequestration in agriculture, forestry and other land use with EX-ACT

Released: June 2019 - 5 h
Are you aware that Agriculture, Forestry and Land Use Change (AFOLU) contributes to carbon sequestration as co-benefits through productive and sustainable landscape management? At the same time AFOLU is the second largest emitter of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide. GHG accounting in the AFOLU sector is an important indicator and integral to the design and planning of landscape interventions. The EX-Ante Carbon-balance Tool (EX-ACT), developed by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is a user-friendly tool for estimating GHG emissions and carbon sequestration in AFOLU projects.

The national greenhouse gas inventory for land use

Released: December 2020 - 15 h
This course provides the necessary knowledge to build a sustainable National Greenhouse Gas Inventory (NGHGI) and assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals from the land use sector. It focuses on the biological and physical process that lead to GHG fluxes from land use-related activities.

Introduction to climate-smart agriculture

Released: November 2018 - 1 h 30
This course analyses climate change impacts on agriculture, food security and food systems and provides an overview of the main climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in agriculture. It also introduces the Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) approach and describes the 5-step process to implement it.

Water management for climate-smart agriculture

Released: November 2018 - 1 h 30
This course focuses on water management and its critical role in climate-smart agriculture. It analyses the impacts of climate change on the availability of freshwater resources for agriculture and considers possible water management options for adaptation to climate change and for climate change mitigation.

Climate-smart livestock production

Released: November 2018 - 3 h
This course analyses the role of livestock production in climate-smart agriculture. It describes the importance of livestock production to food security and identifies adaptation and mitigation strategies and practices along the entire livestock supply chain. It also illustrates how livestock keeping is itself an adaptation strategy and how the sector can contribute to the global mitigation effort.

Climate-smart crop production

Released: November 2018 - 2 h 30
This course looks at the relationship between crop production and climate change. It explores the principles and practices for sustainable and profitable production of annual and perennial crops to meet food, feed, energy, fibre needs and foster economic growth in a variety of contexts and crop systems.

Climate-smart soil and land management

Released: November 2018 - 2 h
This course focuses on sustainable soil and land management for climate-smart agriculture. It provides technical knowledge and examines how wide-scale implementation of climate-smart soil and land management practices can enhance the mitigation of climate change and efforts to adapt to its impacts.

The national greenhouse gas inventory for agriculture

Released: February 2017 - 7 h
This course provides the necessary knowledge to build a sustainable National Greenhouse Gas Inventory (NGHGI) and assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the agriculture sector.
