Remarks by Patricia Espinosa, UNFCC Executive Secretary, following the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding with FAO allowing both institutions to better serve countries around the world to adapt to and mitigate the impact of warmer global temperatures and meet their pledges to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

The video explains how the agriculture sectors are the most vulnerable to climate change and climate variability. This poses a multitude of challenges that must be overcome in the medium and long-term to ensure the lives, livelihoods as well as food security and nutrition of millions of people around the world. The need to adapt to changing climatic conditions is pressing for the poor - particularly women- who depend directly on agriculture for their livelihoods. The National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process can catalyse implementation and financing for these agriculture-related adaptation priorities and working towards meeting the goals laid out in the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It also highlights the ongoing work of FAO and UNDP’s “Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans (NAP-Ag)” Programme.

Madagascar is currently the 5th worldwide among countries most exposed to risks due to climate change and the first country in Africa exposed. For 30 years since 1980, natural hazards including droughts, earthquakes, epidemics, floods, cyclones and extreme temperatures, caused economic damage of more than $1 billion in Madagascar and the agricultural sector is among the hardest hit sectors.
