WEBINAR SERIES: Empowering youth in agriculture to engage in UNFCCC and COP processes

The “Empowering youth in agriculture to engage in UNFCCC and COP processes” webinar series aims to clarify decision-making processes around climate change and agriculture for young people. Ultimately, it aims to empower youth and build their capacity to influence decision-making related to the UNFCCC and COP.

This webinar series is organized by the FAO Climate Change Knowledge Hub and the Children and Youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (YOUNGO) in collaboration with the World Food Forum.

SPEAKERS

Elizabeth Gulugulu is an environmental scientist and climate activist. She is the YOUNGO Global South Focal Point and the contact person for the Agricultural Working Group. She has a vast experience in youth engagement in climate policy and has contributed to agriculture-related policies over the years. An enthusiastic advocate of grassroot youths, women and people with disabilities facing the brunt of Climate Change.

Menna Moustafa is a diplomatic attachée at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, currently working at the Department of Climate, Environment and Sustainable Development and a member of the COP27 Presidency Team. She holds a BSc in Political Science from Cairo University and pursues her post-graduate studies in Global Affairs at The American University in Cairo.

Genna Tesdall is an agriculture systems thinker taking on projects to sustain the environment and people, now as the director of YPARD. She strives to be a servant-leader in order to foster equality between generations (and all delimiters of privilege). Before joining YPARD, she was the federal agricultural policy officer at the German Rural Youth Association (Bund der Deutschen Landjugend, 2020) and the former president of the International Association of Agriculture and Related Sciences Students (IAAS, 2013-14).

Peshang HAMA KARIM is the Regional Youth Focal Point - Northern Africa and Western Asia of the Water and Climate Coalition, a cross-sector initiative of World Meteorological Organization and UN Water to support the implementation of UN-Water Action Decade through the UN-Water Global Accelerator Framework for UN SDG6. He is currently working as a PhD student on a research regarding problems of Sulejów reservoir Pollution in Poland.

Alexis Balimann is a board member of the Swiss Youth for Climate and the co-founder of Bouteka, an eco-responsible platform for buying baskets of unpackaged organic and local fruits and vegetables.

Mirella Salvatore  is the coordinator of the Climate Change Knowledge Hub and leading the Transparency stream in the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). She has more than 10 years of experience in climate change, focusing on international reporting (Nationally Determined Contribution, GHG inventory, Biennial Transparency Report), with a focus on the agriculture and land use sectors.

Rahmina Paullete is a 16 year old climate activist , environmentalist and a wildlife conservationist from Kenya. She is the founder of Kisumu Environmental Champions which is a green initiative made up of 120 kids , teenagers and youths that are doing environmental conservation through clean ups, growing trees ,promoting climate literacy to the community and supporting their campaign called #LetLakeVictoriaBreathAgain which is focusing on restoring the ecosystem of Lake Victoria. Moreover, she has her own eco business by the name RahminaPaulleteEcoProducts that makes water hyacinth products. She is also a campaigner and the Focal Point of Food At Cop which is an international campaign which advocates for plant based meals to be served in climate conferences , this year the campaign is aiming to promote indigenous vegetables to be served at Cop27 . Furthermore , she is a climate activist in FridaysForFuture International, FridaysForFutureMapa and is a young climate champion at Wangari Maathai Foundation.

Cecilia Quaglino is Born and raised in Rosario, Argentina, Cecilia has led the LCOY 2021 and the collaborative process for the National Statement in her country. She was a Country Delegate, attending COY16 and COP26 in Glasgow and is the current Country Contact Point (CCP) elected by YOUNGO. Cecilia is the Regional Liaison for Latin America and the Caribbean at ECOS - Education, Communication & Outreach (UNFCCC) and was one of the 10 international elected participants for the ACE Youth Exchange that took place in Bonn late June 2022. Cecilia is the current Sustainable International project and Public participation Manager for the Environmental Observatory (National University of Rosario, Argentina) and is the Regional Coordinator of B-Corps Argentina. She has studied environmental engineering and has been a climate and environmental activist since 2017, being one of the main organizers in Fridays For Future Argentina. In the last 5 years her professional experience was focused on working with multiple stakeholders from NGOs in local and regional level, in order to implement concrete actions for the SDG, especially on SDG13 (Climate Action) and SDG17 (Partnership for the goals).

SPEAKERS

Oluwatosin Ogunsola is an agri-food systems expert with over 20 publications and a Masters in Soil Management. He is currently a contact point of the YOUNGO Agriculture working group and Chief Executive of Templus Agro-Consults Limited.

Anna Salminen is a Finnish forest ecologist dealing with climate, agriculture, and food policy issues at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Finland. She is a member of the Finnish delegation for the international climate negotiations but also coordinating the work at the EU level on issues related to agriculture and Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture at COP27. Additionally, she works on the transition towards the climate neutrality in Finnland by 2035.

Dirk Nemitz is Team lead of the Agriculture, Forestry and Land-use unit in the UNFCCC secretariat. He has over 10 years experience in UNFCCC conferences and the intergovernmental process on climate change and land, with particular expertise on the Warsaw Framework for REDD+, Article 5 of the Paris Agreement and the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture. Dirk is also involved in the implementation of UNFCCC decisions through coordinating UNFCCC transparency processes and providing further support to Parties and non-Party stakeholders upon request and in existing collaborations and partnerships of the secretariat. He has fieldwork experience in Alaska, Costa Rica, Germany and Nicaragua and holds a BSc in forestry as well as an MSc in international nature conservation.

Hailey Campbell has 5+ years of experience organizing and volunteering for climate justice initiatives, including serving as the Co-Executive Director of Care About Climate, building an equitable climate adaptation strategy for Honolulu's municipal climate change office, drafting a framework for sustainable and resilient island futures, and leading the push for youth-inclusion in climate policy-making as a member of YOUNGO's Action for Climate Empowerment team.

Pui Yee Leung is the Project Director of V'air, supervising projects to promote a low-carbon lifestyle and sustainable tourism in Hong Kong. She is also the Project Co-Founder of FoodEN, advocating for food waste to energy and food waste recycling. She is also actively engaged in YOUNGO NDCs, Green Jobs, and ACE working groups. This year, she has been selected as the TheirWorld Global Youth Ambassador to promote climate education from regional to global.

Paul Chukwuma is Nigerian and resides in Rwanda. He is the Communications Co-coordinator for the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition. He is an action researcher currently working on three research papers cutting across climate change and transformation. In the past, he held leading roles at ClimateScience, SDG7 youth constituency etc.

Mclarence Mandaza PhD  possesses a total of 12 years in the agriculture and humanitarian sector including climate adaptation and agroecology. He is also Zimbabwe negotiator on climate change under the UNFCCC process mainly on Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture Programme and Loss & Damage agenda items.

 

Cathy Yitong Li  follows UNFCCC processes with a focus on technology and finance from gender and youth perspectives. Cathy is also a OneStepGreener ambassador of COP26, youth advisor at UNIDO and to the CEO of Global Center on Adaptation. By profession, Cathy is a sustainable finance consultant at Deloitte's London office.

 

Lana Weidgenant  is a Brazilian-American youth climate activist who specializes in the intersection of food and diets with the climate crisis. She was the Youth Vice-Chair of Shifting to Sustainable Consumption for the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit and currently serves as a Campaigns and Policy Manager for food awareness organization ProVeg International and as Co-Contact Point of YOUNGO's Agriculture Working Group.

 

Xan Northcott , from the United Kingdom, is the 2022 Global North Focal Point for YOUNGO, the Children and Youth Constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which coordinates the participation of youth civil society in the UNFCCC intergovernmental climate change negotiations.

 

Aya Mounir is a Agro-food industries engineering student, member of IAAS Morocco, head of “ Food Security : Towards Zero Hunger “ Think-Tank within FAYI (Food and Agriculture Youth Institute) and delegate of IAAS at COP26 and SB56.

Nithi Nesadurai is Director and Regional Coordinator of Climate Action Network Southeast Asia (CANSEA). He represents 21 member organisations in six countries. CANSEA is a regional node of Climate Action Network which has more than 1,700 member organisations in over 130 countries.

 

Joshua Amponsem  is an environmental and climate activist from YOUNGO. He is the founder of Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) and focuses on the role of youth in Climate Change Adaptation, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Resilience Building, including as the lead author of Adapt for Our Future – the first-ever background paper on youth and climate change adaptation.

Stephanie is the coordinator of the Climate Save Movement and a regional liaison for LATAM. She is a member of the YOUNGO Agriculture Working Group. She was part of the Argentinean delegation at COP21, COP25 and COP26, representing civil society organizations.

AbdulHakim Elwaer is FAO Assistant Director- General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa. Mr. Elwaer, a national of Libya, holds a Ph.D. of Philosophy in Environmental Chemistry from Sheffield University, the United Kingdom, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Organizational Leadership from the Gestalt Centre of Organizations and Systems Development in the United States, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering and Science Technology from the University of Sabha in Libya.

Benja Faecks is a German climate scientist situated in the Netherlands. She holds a degree in International Development Studies and Climate Studies, in which she focused on voluntary carbon trading. She is the co-founder of IAAS Netherlands, an international network for students in agriculture which is also a member of YOUNGO.

Omar Farhate is a Moroccan Plant Health scientist, holding an agricultural engineering degree. He is a current double masters student  in Spain and France. In 2020 - 2021, he was the president of IAAS World where he pioneered the network's involvement in the global climate change policy as well the food and agriculture policy. He currently leads the Food and Agriculture Youth Institute (FAYI) of IAAS World, aiming at involving young people in the food systems policy space and debate.

Pramisha Thapaliya is a climate and food systems advocate from Nepal. She has been following Koronivia negotiations since its inception. She worked as the contact point of the YOUNGO Agriculture Working Group for 4 years. Her work and interests lie in the climate-agriculture-food nexus and empowering youth to drive change for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Economics with a research focus on agricultural and resource economics.

Yumikani Idriss is an Environmental Officer in Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate change. He is a transparency coordinator for the Least Developed Countries and a Technical Expert Reviewer under the UNFCCC.


Youth for agriculture in UNFCCC decision-making

Martial Bernoux is a former high level scientist. He worked for the French Research Institute for Development (IRD) with more than 200 research papers, books and chapters. He led research projects in South America and Africa for 20 years and has a strong experience of UNFCCC and UNCDD processes (a member of its Science-Policy Interface). He also collaborates with IPCC since 2002.
