Are you ready to make your GHG inventory transparent? An overview of section II of the modalities, procedures and guidelines
20 January 2021, 10:00 - 11:10 (Rome, GMT +1)
The webinar introduces section II of the Modalities, Procedures and Guidelines (MPGs) which deal with national greenhouse gas inventories (NGHGI). It looks at the differences between the current Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) system and the new Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF).
The webinar offers insights into the new reporting requirements that are part of the biennial transparency reports (BTR) with a specific focus on the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector.
Participants are guided through the new GHGI reporting requirements and most common challenges that countries could face when moving to the ETF. FAO's Global “capacity-building towards enhanced transparency in the agriculture, forestry and other land use sector” (CBIT-AFOLU) project's activities, including an e-learning course on "Preparing a greenhouse gas inventory under the Enhanced Transparency Framework", are also covered.
Main objectives
Highlight the importance of making the GHG inventory compliant with ETF requirements.
Familiarize participants with the most common challenges to enhancing the transparency of the NGHGI.
Present FAO’s revised e-learning course on GHG inventories.
Introduce the next event of the ETF webinar series.
Target audience
The main target audience of this webinar includes staff from national institutions in CBIT-AFOLU countries (global project and national CBIT projects).
Speakers
Dr. Sawsan Fouad Ahmed Salih is the Director General of the Department of planning of the Ministry of Agriculture of Sudan. She has a PHD in Environmental studies from the University of Khartoum.
Alessandro holds a PhD in agriculture and has experience in climate change and mitigation options. He contributed to FAO's work on the global estimation of GHG emissions from Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector, and is currently involved in developing tools and learning materials for capacity development activities related to climate change. He is a UNFCCC reviewer of GHG inventories (agriculture sector), biennial reports and national communications for UNFCCC Annex I Parties.
Sabin Guendehou is a programme officer at the GHG Support Unit of the Transparency Division at the UNFCCC secretariat. He supports developing countries with establishing sustainable national GHG inventory management systems; and with building their technical capacities in order to meet the reporting requirements under the Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system and the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement.
He has extensive experience in developing and implementing capacity-building programmes in developing countries; training programmes for both developing and developed countries; and also on the UNFCCC review process (biennial update reports, biennial reports, REDD+ submissions, submissions from Annex I Parties).
Sabin’s background is in academia and he has a PhD in environmental sciences with a focus on carbon dynamics in tropical forest ecosystems. He is the IPCC Lead author and former member of the Bureau of the IPCC Task Force on National GHG Inventories.
Paolo Prosperi is a climate change expert of the ETF team, enthusiastically contributing to several activities in the field of climate change including knowledge production, project development and much more. He has extensive experience in supporting capacity building in developing countries, especially in the field of national greenhouse (GHG) inventories, IPCC Guidelines and IPCC software.
Paolo started his carrier in the private sector as professional forester, joining FAO geospatial unit in 2004. He then worked for the European Commission at the Joint Research Centre on agriculture-related policy evaluation. He resumed collaboration with FAO in 2014 in the climate and land department, working on the update of the FAOSTAT greenhouse gas emissions database on burning of biomass. He then worked on country capacity building and project development and implementation in the climate change domain.
Paolo holds an MSc in Forestry (Bioengineering), a Masters degree in remote sensing and natural resources evaluation, and a PhD in Agriculture Ecology (conservation agriculture).
Dominique Revet leads the GHG Support Unit at the UNFCCC Secretariat. He has extensive experience in supporting reporting from developing countries, especially in the field of national greenhouse (GHG) inventories and mitigation assessment and actions. His recent activities include supervising regionalcapacity building projects aiming at the establishment of sustainable national GHG inventory management systems, organizing hands-on training workshops on the 2006 IPCC guidelines for national GHG inventories, and leading the work of the UNFCCC Secretariat on strengthening the capacity of developing countries to prepare and manage national GHG inventories as a basis for effective Enhanced Transparency Framework under the Paris Agreement.
He started his professional carrier as a researcher for an international non-governmental organization based in Africa, where he spent 10 years providing technical assistance and support to developing countries in the field of energy planning and development, development of national GHG inventories, and implementing mitigation studies and projects. He then joined the UNFCCC secretariat where he has been a Programme Officer and Team Lead of various Unit; but always in the field of provision of technical support to developing countries.
Mirella Salvatore is the project coordinator of the FAO “Global capacity-building towards enhanced transparency in the AFOLU sector (CBIT-AFOLU)“ project funded by the GEF CBIT funds. She is also leading the coordination of FAO efforts in the Enhanced Transparency Framework. Mirella is working at FAO since 2002 and has more than 10 years of national and international experience in climate change, supporting countries to establish and enhance sustainable Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems, with a focus on national GHG inventory, in light of the transparency requirements. Mirella is an economist with a PhD in Statistics and long-term experience in GIS and remote sensing.
Moderator
Giulia Maria Galbiati is a climate change consultant in the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB). She follows activities related to NDC enhancement and implementation and is part of the Secretariat of the Thematic Working Group on Agriculture, Food Security and Land use, facilitated by FAO.
