Malawi is perennially susceptible to various natural and economic shocks, including prolonged dry spells, floods, pests and diseases, and high food price volatility. These have eroded the resilience of most poor and vulnerable households, and compromised their ability to sustain their livelihoods. The project aimed to increase the capacity of the most vulnerable households in two Traditional Authorities of Chiwalo and Jenala in Phalombe district to meet their basic needs and withstand climatic and economic shocks. This was to be achieved by building community/livelihood assets by targeted households and communities; supporting and implementing resilience programmes in coordination with humanitarian assistance; strengthening the capacity of agricultural extension service providers, vulnerable households and communities; and implementing community-based nutrition education and communication programmes.

Following the fall of the Soviet Union, aquaculture production across Central Asia has dramatically declined and many operational fish farms have been abandoned. Existing pond farms and new production facilities in the Kyrgyz Republic are promising, yet a lack of technical expertise and support industries limits the potential growth of the aquaculture sector. Fish farmers rely on costly imported or poor quality feeds and, as a result, suffer from low production rates and economic returns. This project aimed to revitalise the aquaculture sector by promoting the manufacture and use of high quality, cost-effective and safe aquafeeds. The objective was to support fish farmers and fish farming communities to sustainably develop and optimise on-farm feed management practices, thereby enhancing the economic performance of the aquaculture sector.

Although fisheries play an important role in economic development and food security in the Bahamas, the lack of proper fisheries sector policies, planning frameworks and outdated legislation have hindered the sustainable utilization and management of fisheries and aquaculture resources. The project aimed to build institutional capacities in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors by developing management, strategy and planning policies and frameworks and support the establishment of a functional Fisheries Management Information System (FISMIS). Overall, the project enhanced commitment towards sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development in the Bahamas.

There is increasing recognition of the role of livestock in sustaining and supporting poor peoples’ livelihoods and nutritional status, but the livestock sector in Myanmar is dominated by smallholder producers who keep few animals under traditional production and management systems. Husbandry practices for livestock are low input and fairly basic. The adoption of proper feeding and husbandry practices and utilization of locally available feed and fodder resources is crucial for ensuring the productivity of animals. This project was implemented to strengthen the technical, managerial and policy capacity of public and private stakeholders and overcome critical gaps in the ability to develop appropriate animal feeding strategies, so as to improve milk and meat production.
