Agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina plays a crucial role in the economy, providing primary or supplementary income for around 139,000 people. The structure of the agricultural sector is marked by small family farms, the majority of which primarily produce for domestic consumption. Agricultural production faces challenges of fragmented production, and lack of mechanization and expertise, hindering scalability and market reach. This is exacerbated by the disconnection between primary production and the processing industry and insufficient value-added production.
The country has been aligning with the framework proposed by FAO and ITU in its e-agriculture strategy guide to improve rural living standards and support the EU accession process. The digital agriculture strategy of BiH developed by FAO outlines a vision and an action plan for integrating ICT into agriculture. Digitalization in agriculture is also supported by community-led development approaches. DVI in Bosnia and Herzegovina is focused on developing the potential for rural and agri-tourism and improving market reach for renowned traditional local products through the adoption of digital tools and services. Currently, in the scope of DVI the village of Mokro in the Pale municipality and the rural community of Brežani-Tržišće in the Kakanj municipality are undergoing digital transformation processes.
