Bilateral Meeting with the Prime Minister of Egypt - H.E. Mostafa Madbouly
Rome – Today the FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, met with H.E. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt on the sidelines of the UN Food Systems Summit +2.
The Prime Minister of Egypt congratulated the Director-General on his re-election and expressed Egypt’s commitment to support the objectives of the Organization.
The Director-General welcomed the Prime Minister and conveyed FAO’s appreciation to the Government of Egypt for hosting the FAO Regional Office for the Near East in Cairo, and for Egypt’s strong cooperation with FAO, including through South-South Cooperation.
The Director-General commended Egypt for the successful organization of the UN Climate Conference (COP27) and leadership in reaching an agreement among negotiating parties and reconfirmed FAO’s support to the Egyptian COP27 presidency initiatives, including the Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation (FAST) initiative. He further emphasized Egypt’s potential in becoming a center of agrifood industries in the region.
The pair emphasized the importance of supporting countries in building resilience and facing the ongoing challenges to food security in cooperation with international financing institutions. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation between the Egyptian World Youth Forum and the World Food Forum which will be held at FAO in October 2023.
H.E. El Sayed El Quseir, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation provided an overview of Egypt’s efforts to enhance agriculture productivity and support food security of its population, and indicated that Egypt and FAO can further enhance South-South and Triangular Cooperation.
