Bilateral meeting with the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand - Mr Sopat Chavalkul

Rome - The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, had a bilateral meeting with Mr Sopat Chavalkul, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand, on the sidelines of the FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation taking place at FAO Headquarters from 25 to 27 September.

Mr Chavalkul conveyed the congratulations of the Thai government to the Director-General on his second term, and proceeded to provide an overview of the progress achieved on sustainable development of the livestock sector in the country. In this regard, he requested FAO’s technical support in transforming animal production and safety systems through the whole value chain and emphasized that effective livestock disease control is essential for Thailand's livestock sector to meet the growing domestic and international demand.

The Director-General thanked the Thai government for the long-standing commitment to FAO’s mandate and especially the strong support to the Asia and the Pacific region by hosting the FAO regional office in Bangkok. The Director-General encouraged Thailand to continue working together with FAO to share with other countries its experience and technologies in areas such as animal production, One Health and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), as well as livestock systems transformation.
