Bilateral meeting with the Deputy President of Kenya - The Honourable Rigathi Gachagua

Rome – FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and The Honourable Rigathi Gachagua, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, met on the margins of the UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment taking place at FAO Headquarters from 24 to 26 July 2023.

The Deputy President was accompanied by Franklin Mithika Linturi, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development of the Republic of Kenya and National Convener of the UN Food Systems Summit. The Deputy President began by congratulating the Director-General for his re-election, for a second term, and thanked him for the support provided during his first term. The Deputy President further highlighted that the country would appreciate additional technical support for capacity development to increase production and to address the adverse effects of the climate crisis.  

The Director-General thanked the Deputy President and reiterated the Organization’s commitment to continue supporting Kenya, including through increased capacity on the ground. He congratulated the Deputy President on the achievements made by the country and noted the potential to scale up even more by changing the business model and through innovation.  The two also agreed on key strategic priorities to support agrifood systems transformation, including through increased production and value addition.
