Bilateral meeting with the European Commissioner for Agriculture – H.E. Janusz Wojciechowski

Rome – The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, met at FAO headquarters in Rome with H.E. Janusz Wojciechowski, European Commissioner for Agriculture.

The Director-General thanked the Commissioner for the longstanding support from the European Union and recalled the many meetings the pair had in the past years.

The Commissioner underlined the importance of addressing the global challenges of food security and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. In that regard, he mentioned the important work of the Global Network Against Food Crises, supported by the EU.

The pair also discussed the upcoming UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment that will take place in Rome from 24 to 26 July 2023 at the premises of FAO. In that regard, the Commissioner mentioned sustainable livestock, soil health and water management as examples where the EU is playing an important role.

The Commissioner expressed his appreciation that FAO is organizing the first ever Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation from 25 to 27 September 2023 at FAO headquarters, Rome.

The pair also discussed possible pathways towards agrifood systems transformation and its different dimensions of sustainability: economic, social and environmental, and the key contribution the partnership can make to provide nutritious food for all.
