Bilateral meeting with the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Guatemala – H.E. Karla Gabriela Samayoa Recari

Rome – FAO Director-General QU Dongyu met with the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, H.E. Karla Gabriela Samayoa Recari, at FAO headquarters in Rome.
The pair discussed the challenges facing Guatemala and other Central American countries to transform agrifood systems, especially in the Dry Corridor area.
The Director-General highlighted the importance of attracting investments and creating labor intensive jobs to tackle the problem of distress migration in the region, in particular to support vulnerable people improve their livelihood in their country of origin.
He noted that FAO together with partners has already established a long-term plan for the Dry Corridor to attract donors and investments from the private sector, and encouraged Guatemala to actively participate in the Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum, under the umbrella of the World Food Forum taking place at FAO headquarters from 16 to 20 October.
The Vice Minister thanked FAO for the ongoing support and stressed the importance of focusing on youth, women and indigenous peoples.
