Director-General meets with Prime Minister of Moldova

19 December 2019, Rome – Prime Minister Ion Chicu of the Republic of Moldova visited FAO headquarters today to meet with Director-General QU Dongyu to discuss ongoing projects and confirm willingness for close collaborations.

The Director-General and the Prime Minister discussed a new $1.8 million FAO project on land degradation neutrality in Moldova that has been approved by the Global EnvironmentalFacility and will be launched in 2020. 

He also presented the Hand-in-Hand Initiative, inviting Moldova to participate. 

Prime Minister Chicu took office last month and FAO is the first United Nations agency he has visited, indicating its importance for a country with a substantial rural population and where agriculture has a large economic role. 

Prime Minister Chicu praised FAO’s support for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, noting with particular appreciation FAO initiatives in the areas of land consolidation, harnessing modern technology in agriculture, and reducing food loss and waste across the whole cycle of agri-food value chains. 

He also invited the Director-General to visit Moldova next year.
