FAO Director-General and Minister for Agriculture of Nicaragua acknowledge longstanding collaboration
17 October 2019, Rome - FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu and H.E. Edward Centeno Gadea, Minister for Agriculture of Nicaragua, in talks today reviewed key initiatives and issues of common interest, on the sidelines of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), hosted by FAO, which is holding its 46th session this week.
The Minister for Agriculture expressed appreciation for the Organization’s support to Nicaragua and underscored his Government’s commitment to support the Director-General’s actions towards reducing hunger and promoting sustainable development worldwide. Nicaragua’s future initiatives include the development of new programmes of work related to coffee and cacao crops, livestock and irrigation, as well as a broader study on the best use of public investments in the agricultural sector.
During the meeting, the parties outlined the importance of the next FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, which will be hosted by Nicaragua in April 2020, as an important platform to elevate discussions on fighting hunger, poverty and malnutrition, as well as to promote sustainable agriculture and address the impacts of climate change in the region. According to the FAO Director-General, such event also represents a great opportunity for Nicaragua to showcase its potential for investments and development.
