24/11/2022

Muscat – On the sidelines of the Third Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), FAO Director-General QU Dongyu held talks with representatives of the Government of Oman. Qu met the Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers of Oman, Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud Al Said, and the Minister for Health, Hilal bin Ali Al Sabti.

The Director-General thanked Oman for hosting the AMR Global Conference and reiterated that FAO is committed to supporting the achievement of zero hunger in the world.

Qu and Deputy Prime Minister Sayyid Fahd discussed the need to address the transformation of global agrifood systems, especially in light of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and other ongoing conflicts across the world, which have aggravated food security globally.

The Director-General noted Oman’s strategic position close to the sea and highlighted how its fisheries sector, particularly aquaculture, can play a key role in achieving food security. A holistic approach, involving the use of solar power, could support Oman to build reservoirs for aquaculture and agriculture, and help the environment, Qu added.

During his meeting with Oman's Minister of Health, Qu highlighted the links between health and agriculture, especially healthy diets, and noted in particular the importance of the AMR conference held in Muscat in this context. The Director-General recommended that the Omani government consider promoting the consumption of fish and the importance of healthy diets in schools.
