FAO and Peru sign new Memorandum of Understanding
Rome - FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Peru, Oscar Maúrtua de Romaña, today signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening collaboration between the UN agency and one of its founding Members.
Minister Maúrtua highlighted that Peru is seeking FAO’s support to promote the country’s “Second Agrarian Reform”, pointing out that Peruvian farmers need to have access to new technologies to improve production and productivity. He also stressed that the Peruvian Government looks forward to implementing the Hand in Hand Initiative in the country.
The Director-General assured the Minister that FAO will continue supporting Peru to transform its agrifood systems, to make them more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable.
The new MoU provides a framework for strengthening cooperation towards the sustainable development of agriculture and forests, and with particular focus on fisheries and aquaculture. This aims to contribute to strengthening the capacity of rural households to preserve their livelihoods and secure access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food for all.
Specific objectives of the MoU include technical and financial resource mobilization in support of territories with agricultural potential and a significant presence of subsistence family farmers – framed within the Hand-in-Hand initiative. It also foresees support in addressing the food emergency faced by vulnerable populations, including support to Peru’s Multisectoral Commission on Food and Nutritional Security (COMSAN); the design and execution of projects under the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Adaptation Fund; and support for the realization of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022.
