Read-out of the FAO Director-General’s meeting with Oumar Ibn Daoud, Minister for Agriculture Development of the Republic of Chad

Rome - FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and Oumar Ibn Daoud, Minister for Agriculture Development of the Republic of Chad met today at the sidelines of the World Food Forum (WFF) being held at FAO’s headquarters in Rome (17-21 October 2022).  

The Minister reiterated the importance of the good cooperation between FAO and the Republic of Chad and his appreciation for the opportunity to address the WFF. He noted the importance of the event in supporting Members achieve agrifood systems transformation, and specifically better production in the case of Chad. In his exchange, he highlighted the importance of improving post-harvest capacities and transportation infrastructure to better support small farmers.

The Director-General and the Minister also exchanged views on the climate crisis and specifically the negative impacts of the floods in N’Djamena on the current harvesting period, following the overflow of the Chari River. The Director-General reiterated FAO’s continued support to address these adverse effects of the floods and noted that there is a need for an agile and comprehensive response. A clear mapping and assessment of the damage caused, investment in relief efforts (relief crops) and a social protection system to support those most affected.  

The two also agreed on key strategic priorities to support agrifood systems transformation, through increased production and value addition. In particular, Global Action on Green Development of Special Agricultural Products, One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) and how it can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by also increasing job creation and youth engagement.   

The Director-General and Minister agreed to continue the cooperation.
