Read-out of the FAO Director-General’s meeting with Tsimanaoraty Paubert Mahatante, Minister for Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Republic of Madagascar
Rome - FAO Director-General QU Dongyu today met Tsimanaoraty Paubert Mahatante, Minister for Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Republic of Madagascar, at the sidelines of the 35th Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries COFI in Rome (5 – 9 September 2022).
The Minister expressed his appreciation for the support and partnership with FAO, and shared with the Director-General his vision and strategy for the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Madagascar. He noted that the strategy is critical for the achievement of food security and better nutrition, whilst empowering women and youth in the fisheries sector.
The Director-General welcomed the Minister and congratulated him on his appointment and the work he has set out to accomplish. The Director-General explained the importance of identifying clearly the areas of development in the fisheries sector in order to then prepare the appropriate investment plan and attract support from both public and private investors.
The two also discussed the importance of holistic science-based solutions to ensure innovation in the fisheries value chain. The two reiterated their commitment to continued cooperation in this regard.
