Read-out of the bilateral meeting between FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and H.E. Khaled Hneifat Minister for Agriculture of The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
28 July 2021, Rome - The FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, met with H.E. Khaled Hneifat,Minister for Agriculture of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The Director-General appreciated the Royal directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II to the Government to prioritize the food security profile.
The Minister introduced the Kingdom's strategy to transform agri-food systems and achieve food security, highlighting the main challenges and opportunities facing the Jordanian agriculture sector.
In this regard, the Minister appreciated FAO's important support to the agriculture sector in Jordan and proposed ideas for further collaboration, including through the support of the private sector and the promotion of high value-added agriculture products.
The Director-General confirmed FAO's commitment to supporting the Kingdom's efforts towards transformation to sustainable agri-food systems, emphasizing the importance of identifying key agriculture products in the framework of the FAO One-Country-One-Commodity Initiative.
The Director-General reiterated the importance of climate financing to support the government’s efforts in dealing with the impacts of the climate crisis. The Director-General referred to a funding agreement signed with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for building resilience to cope with the climate crisis through improving water use efficiency in the agriculture sector.
The two sides agreed to further consolidate collaboration in these and other priority areas.
