Bilateral meeting with H.E. Ayman Suleiman, Minister of Environment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

Belém, Brazil – On the sidelines of the Belém Climate Summit, the FAO Director-General met with H.E. Ayman Suleiman, Minister of Environment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, to discuss ongoing and future areas of cooperation in addressing climate challenges and promoting sustainable environmental management.
The Director-General thanked the leadership of King Abdullah II in guiding the Hashemite Kingdom’s longstanding collaboration with FAO and highlighted the country’s commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and the efficient use of natural resources. He noted the strong partnership built over years of joint work, emphasizing FAO’s support in improving water efficiency, enhancing resilience in dryland ecosystems, and strengthening food security in the face of the climate crisis.
The Minister expressed appreciation for FAO’s technical assistance and capacity building efforts in Jordan, including initiatives focused on ecosystem restoration, drought adaptation, and biodiversity preservation. He underlined the importance of expanding collaboration in areas such as the blue economy and smart agriculture, both crucial for Jordan’s environmental and agricultural sustainability.
The pair also discussed opportunities for enhanced cooperation under international climate financing mechanisms, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), to support Jordan’s national priorities on environmental protection, land restoration, and adaptation to climate impacts.
In closing, the Director-General praised Jordan’s leadership in promoting regional environmental dialogue and sustainable management of scarce water resources. He reaffirmed FAO’s readiness to continue supporting Jordan in implementing innovative, science-based solutions and transforming the country into a regional technical training and knowledge-sharing hub.
