Bilateral meeting with H.E. Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister for Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan

Tashkent - FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, met with His Excellency Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister for Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, in Tashkent, on the sidelines of the LLDC Forum on Food Security and SDGs, hosted by Uzbekistan, to discuss current collaboration and means to further strengthen relations between FAO and Kyrgyzstan.

The Director-General conveyed his appreciation to the Minister for the good collaboration with the Government of Kyrgyzstan and emphasized the importance of the ongoing joint efforts for the development of the agricultural sector and the transformation of agrifood systems.

In this regard, the Minister outlined the key priority areas for his country including water resources management, development of biomaterials and general planting materials, processing, mechanization and export promotion, and implementation of technologies for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Minister also referred to the upcoming visit to Italy by the President of Kyrgyzstan to Italy, during which he would also be meeting with the Director-General to further strengthen ties with FAO, including through the finalization of the host country agreement.

The Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to supporting Kyrgyzstan’s agricultural priorities through technical assistance for implementation of projects with FAO’s expertise including in agricultural innovation, capacity building, and sustainable development. The Director-General also encouraged Kyrgyzstan to continue the dialogue and proactive engagement to address the challenges faced by the agricultural sector, and reaffirmed FAO’s ongoing support for the transformation of the country’s agrifood system.
