Bilateral meeting with H.E. Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez, Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States

Mexico City – On occasion of his official visit to Mexico, FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, met with His Excellency Juan de la Fuente Ramírez, Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States.
The Secretary for Foreign Affairs welcomed the Director-General, reaffirming Mexico’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism, particularly in these challenging times. He praised FAO's mandate and its crucial role in the international arena. He further reflected on the importance of food security and an effective agricultural system as prerequisites for achieving world peace and development.
The Secretary reassured the Director-General of the country’s willingness to strengthen the partnership with FAO, in coordination with the Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, His Excellency Julio Berdegué Sacristán, who was also present at the meeting.
The Director-General thanked the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stating that Mexico was a key player in providing global public goods in the region and worldwide. He expressed his appreciation for the recent appointment of Ambassador Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas as Mexico’s new Permanent Representative to FAO and looked forward to receiving her in Rome for the presentation of her credentials and to beginning their collaboration.
The Director-General also praised Mexico’s rich, well-documented culture, and its ability to forge links and virtuous cycles among traditional knowledge, biodiversity, modern technology, innovation, and policy. Based on this, he encouraged Mexico to play a leading role in the region, the Global South and beyond, with FAO’s support.
