Bilateral meeting with H.E. Wellington Dias, Minister for Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger of the Federative Republic of Brazil

Rome - FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, met today at FAO headquarters with H.E. Wellington Dias, Minister for Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger of the Federative Republic of Brazil.  

The Director General welcomed the Minister to FAO and in particular commended Brazil’s leadership in the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, emphasizing that FAO would continue to support the Alliance in addressing major food security and poverty challenges around the world.

The Minister expressed his government's appreciation for FAO’s continued support to the Alliance and for hosting the Alliance’s support mechanism. He further provided an overview of the current plans to expand the Alliance's regional presence to provide support on the ground.

In turn, the Director-General emphasized the importance of accelerating the work of the Alliance to address the most pressing challenges and the need to leverage the UN System, as well as the International Financial Institutions’ (IFIs) operational, technical, and financial expertise, alongside experiences from countries with successful poverty and hunger-fighting policies.

The two sides agreed to continue coordination including through expanding South-South and Triangular Cooperation to accelerate hunger reduction and food security
