SECOND VIRTUAL MEETING OF THE STEERING COMMITTEE OF THE
GLOBAL ACTION FOR FALL ARMYWORM CONTROL

Closing remarks by Dr. QU Dongyu, Director-General, FAO

20 July 2020

As prepared

Distinguished Vice Chairs and Members of the Steering Committee,

Dear Colleagues

1. Thank you for your contributions to the discussion today.

2. The exchange reaffirms my belief that only by working together can we tackle the global fall armyworm threat and, indeed, other global threats – COVID-19 has taught us that we need to act in a strategic and unified manner.

3. The spread and management of fall armyworm have international dimensions. Experiences and innovations from one country may benefit other countries. Therefore, bridging scientific information across countries and regions is imperative.

4. The Global Action serves as FAO’s coordination mechanism to connect the dots between those in need of solutions and the solution providers.

5. Listening to the discussion, it is clear to me that to control this pest and secure livelihoods and food security, we need innovation and flexibility in all aspects: coordination, funding, monitoring and early warning, and pest management.

6. Today’s meeting has been fruitful in providing further guidance on the innovative steps we can take to reinforce the Global Action.

7. Your time and thoughts are highly appreciated and I look forward to moving ahead with you in delivering the Global Action.

Thank you and stay safe!
