PREPARATION OF THIS DOCUMENT

This document is the final output of the Project to Improve the Handling of Small Pelagic Fish (GCP INT 298 DEN) funded by the Danish Government under a funds-in-trust agreement with FAO. The document attempts to consolidate the results of investigations in the four countries as investment profiles for improved fish handling which are presented in a standard format. The data collected and the computer programmes developed are set and in considerable detail as they are considered to be relevant to other fisheries.

It is hoped that the publication will be of value to banks and funding agencies in their investigation of the pre-investment phase of projects to improve the handling and utilization of small-pelagic species.

ABSTRACT
The pre-investment studies described in this report are intended to assist in project identification in small pelagic fisheries, which have reached a suitable stage of technical development with FAO/DANIDA assistance. The studies are based on detailed technical analyses whose methods can be readily adapted to other small pelagic fisheries. In each case, the operational research leads directly to financial and economic analyses.
The results of the analyses have led to recommendations for each project that would assist the development process. A further positive recommendation relates to the use of the methodology and the techniques in fisheries in other countries.
