Stocking operations must be planned carefully, beginning from production and ending in monitoring and adjustment of stockings on the basis of monitoring results. An example of an implementation and monitoring plan used in Finland is given in Appendix 3. Several guidelines for the transportation and stocking of fish are available, e.g. EIFAC Technical Paper No. 48, 1986.
Table 2. Summary of situations when stocking is not recommended based on ecological considerations. These recommendations apply to all life stages.
Species | No stocking recommended |
Oligotrophic lakes | No stocking in lakes with fishable vendace stocks (not a measure to stabilize yield fluctuation) No introduction into whitefish lakes (no indigenous vendace) if whitefish is the preferred catch species. |
Vendace | |
Peled | No introduction or stocking into lakes or reservoirs containing indigenous whitefish. |
Whitefish | No stocking into lakes in which indigenous selfsustaining fishable whitefish populations exist. No introduction into char lakes if char is preferred catch species. No stocking into lakes in which stunted whitefish abound and fishing effort is low. No stocking into small char lakes (in large lakes low stocking rate possible). No stocking (or very low stocking rate) into lakes important for vendace fisheries. |
Other Lakes: Vendace and whitefish | In lakes and reservoirs with fishable vendace or whitefish stocks no fish should be stocked originating from other water bodies. |
Peled | As for oligotrophic lakes. |
