PREPARATION OF THIS DOCUMENT
This Roundtable, held under the auspices of the Committee for Inland Fisheries of Africa
(CIFA) Working Party on Stock Assessment, Second Session, was designed to assist CIFA Countries
with better planning for reservoir fisheries management and development. Individuals with expertise
on fisheries in reservoirs in Egypt, Ghana, Madagascar, Mozambique, Sudan and Zimbabwe
participated in the Roundtable.
This document is divided into two parts. The first part provides the background and rationale of
the current CIFA activity on reservoir fisheries, and it summarizes the discussions and recommendations
of the Roundtable. The second part contains a series of syntheses for seven reservoirs of Africa
as presented at the Roundtable.
PREPARATION DU PRESENT DOCUMENT
La table ronde a été organisée sous les auspices de la deuxième session du Groupe de Travail sur
l'évaluation des stocks du Comité des pêches continentales pour l'Afrique (CPCA), afin d'aider les
pays membre du CPCA à améliorer la planification en matière d'aménagement et de mise en valeur
de la pêche en réservoir. Y ont participé des spécialistes des pêches en réservoir d'Egypte, du Ghana,
de Madagascar, du Mozambique, du Soudan et du Zimbabwe.
Ce document se divise en deux parties. Dans la première on expose des généralités sur les
activités entreprises actuellement par le CPCA en matière de pêches en réservoir et on résume les
débats et recommandations de la table ronde. Dans la deuxième partie on présente les études de
synthèses sur sept réservoirs d'Afrique qui ont été soumises à la table ronde.

| ABSTRACT |
| This is a report on African reservoir fisheries in two
parts. The first part provides an overview of the perceptions
of experienced reservoir fishery biologists and
managers about the problems and potentialities of African
reservoir fisheries, particularly about information
necessary for planning for fishery management and
development of new reservoir fisheries. The second part
consists of individual syntheses of information on the
fisheries in reservoirs in seven African countries. The
syntheses vary in scope according to the information
available, but each is a summary of experience valuable
for assessing past applied fishery research and development
activities, and for planning for future improvements.
A final section deals with methodologies for the
assessment of reservoir fishery resources. |

| Ce rapport, en deux parties, concerne les pêcheries
dans les réservoirs africains. La première partie fournit
une vue d'ensemble de la manière dont les biologistes et
les administrateurs spécialistes de la pêche en réservoirs
perçoivent les problèmes ainsi que du potentiel des
pêcheries dans les réservoirs africains, notamment de
l'information nécessaire pour la planification de l'aménagement
et du développement des pêches dans les nouveaux
réservoirs. La deuxième partie contient des synthèses de
l'information sur les pêches en réservoirs dans sept pays
d'Afrique. Ces synthèses ont une portée différente
suivant l'information disponible, mais chacune d'elles
résume une expérience utile pour évaluer les activités
passées de développement et de recherche halieutique
appliquée et planifier les améliorations. Une section
finale traite des méthodologies utilisés pour évaluer les
ressources halieutiques des réservoirs. |
