II. BACKGROUND

The development of shrimp farming and fresh water prawn as well as fish farming is a project of the Fijian government. I have been given a consultancy assignment for a period of two weeks by the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations, Rome, Italy, to study the feasibility of producing feeds based on locally available ingredients for semi-intensive shrimp culture in Fiji.

The terms of reference of the consultancy programme are:

  1. To make an economic study of shrimp feed currently applied for marine shrimp and fresh water prawn farming.

  2. To make a feasibility study of manufacturing economic viable shrimp feed.

  3. To make an operation plan of feed preparation by using equipments available in the aquaculture station, including recommendation of necessary modification/addition of equipment and facility.

  4. 4. To make recommendations for further programme of necessary research/experiment on feed preparation.

The consultancy was for a period of two weeks from Nov. 2 to Nov. 15, 1988.
