The Fourteenth Session of the Intergovernmental Group on Tea will be hosted by the Government of India through the Tea Board of India and will be held in New Delhi from 10-11 October 2001 at the Vigyan Bhawan International Conference Centre. The Session will be preceded by a Conference on Tea and Health on 9 October 2001.
1. At each session, the Group elects a Chairperson and two Vice-Chairpersons. At the Thirteenth Session, it elected Ms Danielle O'Rourke (Canada) as Chairperson, Mr S.S. Ahuja (India) as First Vice-Chairperson and Mr Hagen Streichert (Germany) as Second Vice-Chairperson.
2. The Group will review the market situation during 1999/2000 and evaluate the short-term outlook for 2000/01 with the assistance of background document CCP: TE 01/2. Delegates are invited to present information on the latest developments in production, consumption, trade, prices and market trends to supplement the information in this document.
3. At its last session, the Group concluded that continued efforts to enhance the growth of demand were needed in order to improve and strengthen longer-term price prospects. In seeking to enhance the growth of demand the Group considered that there was a need to continue to analyze the longer-term trends and underlying factors affecting the development of individual tea markets, both for green and black teas. Document CCP: TE 01/3 will be provided to assist the Group in its analysis of medium-term prospects to the year 2010 for green and black tea markets. Delegates are invited to discuss and comment on the outlook.
4. At its last session, the Group requested that the Secretariat continue to analyze markets of interest, including those in the Former Soviet Union and the Near East as the information on the characteristics of these markets would help members formulate appropriate strategies. Budgetary constraints limited coverage to the Russian Federation. Document CCP: TE 01/4 provides a closer examination of the market dynamics and factors driving demand for tea in the Russian Federation. The Group is requested to review the document and make appropriate recommendations.
5. A concern of tea exporters and importers in recent years has been the minimum residue levels (MRL) of mainly pesticides, in tea marketed internationally. The Group, at its last session, requested the Secretariat to present an analysis of the situation. Document CCP: TE 01/5 reviews MRLs and other international trade developments currently affecting world tea trade.
6. A progress report on the Production and Trade of Organic Tea project will be provided to the Group by the Secretariat. Other proposals for submission to the Common Fund for Commodities will be presented to the Group for consideration by sponsoring countries, provided that these proposals reach the Secretariat by 31 July 2001. This deadline was conveyed to members by the Secretariat in April 2001.
7. Under this item, the other organizations working in the fields of tea are invited to inform the Group of their activities.
