Synopsis (short abstract) Jamaica joined FAO in 1963. In 1978, the Organization established a representation in Jamaica which today also covers the Bahamas and Belize. Over the years, FAO has partnered with Jamaica to achieve sustainable agricultural and rural development, mainly through the Organization’s Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP). Interventions have ranged from policy formulation to technical agricultural development and emergency assistance projects. Recent cooperation has placed a strong focus on food security and nutrition, targeting rural, peri-urban and urban populations. Jamaica hosted and chaired the 35th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean (5-8 March 2018, Montego Bay) (LARC). The Chairperson of the 35th Session of the LARC was invited to present the Report of the Regional Conference on programme and budget matters to the FAO Council (4-8 June 2018).

Since the Sudan joined FAO in 1956, technical assistance offered by the Organization has covered the full spectrum of agricultural development through selected interventions targeting priority areas identified by the country as well as the region overall. Key features of cooperation include the formulation of policy and regulatory frameworks, natural resources and disaster risk management, capacity building for increased competitiveness, and strengthening of agricultural statistics. Sudan hosted and chaired the 30th FAO Regional Conference for Africa (19-23 February 2018, Khartoum) (ARC). The Chairperson of the 30th Session of the ARC was invited to present the Report of the Regional Conference on programme and budget matters to the FAO Council (4-8 June 2018).

Cooperation between Fiji and FAO has been ongoing since the country joined the Organization in 1971. Over the past 45 years, FAO assistance has focused on building the evidence base and capacities for policy-making, protecting and enhancing natural resources and building resilience to natural disasters. Fiji is involved in FAO’s new initiative on ValueChains for Food Security and Nutrition in the Pacific Islands. Fiji hosted and chaired the 34th FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific (9-13 April 2018, Nadi) (APRC). The Chairperson of the 34th Session of the APRC was invited to present the Report of the Regional Conference on programme and budget matters to the FAO Council (4-8 June 2018).
