Synopsis (short abstract) This manual is intended to give a broad description of the fertilizer market and to serve as a guide concerning the statistical methodology for the collection, compilation, processing, and analysis of national statistics on mineral fertilizers. It is hoped that the manual will be of use to national statistical offices and will contribute to the improvement of the quality and availability of fertilizer statistics in the various countries. It should be seen as a reference document for the training of national staff, seminars, workshops, etc. The Statistics Division of FAO and the Regional Office for the Near East collaborated in producing this document.

    The FAO Yearbook of fishery statistics: Commodities is a compilation of annual statistical data on production and foreign trade of fishery commodities for all countries and territories of the world. The Yearbook includes data series on production of processed and preserved fishery products in terms of quantity and on imports and exports of fishery products in terms of quantity and value. It also gives statistics of apparent consumption of fish and fishery products, the value and disposition of world fishery production and direction of trade for selected countries. Statistical information in the Yearbook is based primarily on data provided by the countries through questionnaires or official publications. In the absence of official data, FAO makes estimates based on the best information available.

    Fertilizer use by crop in Cuba 2003

    In this study the agro-ecological structure and the areas, yields and fertilization of the individual crops in Cuba are examined. All Cuba’s fertilizer requirements are imported and the quantities available are limited. The use of fertilizers fell by 80 percent during the 1990s and the present level is insufficient to maintain yields and soil fertility. In order to alleviate the situation the Government gives priority to certain key crops such as sugar cane because of its economic importance and potatoes as a key food crop. The use of plant nutrients from organic sources is encouraged. The use of biofertilizers has been tried but only nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium has maintained its position.
