Data collection and analysis related to non-wood forest products - a pilot study in Suriname 2002

The project Data Collection and Analysis for Sustainable Forest Management in ACP Countries - Linking National and International Efforts (GCP/INT/679/CE) was carried out in the context of the European Commission (EC) - FAO Partnership Programme in order to promote the sustainable use of trees and forests in African and Caribbean countries. The project aimed to contribute to the development of policies which would integrate in a balanced way the socio-economic and ecological aspects of the forest ry sector.1 The use of non-wood forest products (NWFP) was studied through two main activities: 1. The documentation of information on the socio-economic importance and ecological impact of the use of NWFP in African and Caribbean countries. The results are presented in various working papers (FAO, 2001; FAO, in prep.) and on the Internet.2 2. The development of methodologies for improved collection, analysis and maintenance of statistical data related to NWFP. These methodologie s should: • provide reasonable estimates on the production, consumption and trade in NWFP; • be widely applicable and relevant to other Caribbean countries; • be cost effective, flexible and feasible given the limited human resources available. Pilot studies on NWFP were carried out in Cameroon, Madagascar, Uganda, Suriname and Zimbabwe.

NON-WOOD FOREST PRODUCTS IN THE NEAR EAST:A REGIONAL AND NATIONAL OVERVIEW 2001
    Also available in:
    No results found.

This regional study presents an overview of the socio-economic importance and ecological impact of the use of non-wood forest products (NWFP) in the Near East. The document consists of two main parts: i) presentation of background information on the programme activities and analysis of the available information on the regional level; and ii) presentation of data on NWFP on the national level (so-called "country profiles"). The country profiles were originally compiled to be made available o n the FAO Web site. However, taking into consideration the limited access to the Internet in various countries, it has been decided to publish, in addition, a hardcopy version of the country profiles and to add a regional analysis of the data. Most of the data presented in this report are indicative figures, which have been collected in published and unpublished reports, and therefore do not represent official statistics. The results presented show that qualitative and quantitative informat ion on NWFP at the national level is still weak. It is hoped that this report will support the on-going process of data improvement on NWFP. Improved data is considered to be essential to ensure that the use and importance of NWFP is adequately taken into consideration by decision-makers, land-use planners, politicians, or other concerned experts. Additional information and comments from readers to improve data on NWFP in Near Eastern countries would be very much appreciated. The authors of the country profiles will be duly acknowledged in the Web version.

Since its first issue in March 1994, Non-Wood News has focused on highlighting the importance of NWFP and promoting all aspects of non-wood forest products (NWFPs). Through its global coverage, it has sought to raise awareness among policy makers and other readers about the multiplicity of NWFPs and the opportunities that they can offer, as well as the vital role they play in forest-dependent communities. In fact, numerous people worldwide depend on NWFPs for their subsistence, food security, he alth care and cash income.
