This note illustrates the concept behind the two Independent Food Systems Summit Dialogues co-organized by FAO, CIHEAM, UfMS, One Planet Network SFS Programme and PRIMA Foundation that will take place on 27 April and 3 June 2021. In line with the Summit's vision, principles and Action Tracks, these two events aim at highlighting collaborative and science-based pathways leading to the transformation of food systems in the Mediterranean towards the achievement of the SDGs. These dialogues foresee the active involvement and engagement of a wide diversity of stakeholders, coming together to jointly identify concrete and cross-cutting solutions to face Mediterranean-specific challenges by means of a Sustainable Food Systems silos-breaking approach. The two Dialogues are co-organized within the framework of the FAO/CIHEAM/UfMS MoU, the FAO/PRIMA MoU, and project GCP/INT/748/ITA. They will contribute to promoting food systems transformation in the Mediterranean, in line with the "4 Betters" of the new strategic framework of FAO. These dialogues are bringing together key partners in the Mediterranean region and are foreseen to set the stage for the inception of a multi-stakeholder initiative for SFS in the Mediterranean co-led by FAO, CIHEAM and UfM.

The third Independent Food Systems Summit Dialogue on "Pathways for the future of Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean", co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA), and One Planet Network’s Sustainable Food Systems Programme (OPN-SFSP), will be held on 9 December 2021. The event is conceived as a follow-up to the two other dialogues held in April and June 2021, as well as to the whole UN Food Systems Summit process in the context of the Mediterranean region. The virtual event will bring together different stakeholders in order to take stock of regional and national efforts as a follow-up to the UN Food Systems Summit in the Mediterranean region, and exchange on the way forward and on opportunities for collaboration at national and regional level.

In this paper, we aim to synthesize and analyse the focus, results and main issues emanating from the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) in the region of Europe and Central Asia. In particular, the focus is the 17 FAO programme countries in the Western Balkans and Türkiye, Caucasus and CIS Europe, and Central Asia (ECA-17). We offer a stocktake of the outcomes from a subset of these dialogues – those convened by national governments, referred to under the UNFSS process as ‘Member State Dialogues’ – and of the pathways for food system transformation submitted by 11 of the 17 governments. These pathways, known as ‘National Pathways’, were informed by the Member State Dialogues and are intended as a blueprint to guide action beyond the UNFSS. This paper is intended to provide a succinct overview of country priorities and issues common among countries in ECA-17, and to inform national governments and food system stakeholders as they look to build on outcomes from the UNFSS and advance food system transformation at national level. It does not offer a broader overview of the state of food system-related policy in the region, nor does it draw on material beyond that submitted as part of the formal UNFSS process.
