Synopsis (short abstract) Erratic weather conditions across most of the Syrian regions, especially in the main cereal producing areas of the country in 2021 raised the need for an assessment based on well-established and recognized criteria to produce crop estimates comparable with previous assessments. In response to the request by the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic to conduct an analysis of the agricultural production in the 2020/21 crop season, in light of critical weather conditions, difficult economic environment exacerbated by other challenges, the FAO carried out an independent Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM) to estimate the 2021 cereal production, to assess the overall situation of the agricultural sector and to gauge prospects for the upcoming 2021/22 season. Given the travel restrictions, the mission relied on the network of resilience officers employed by the FAO Country Office that have detailed knowledge of local agricultural conditions and agro-ecological zones based across the different governorates. The field information collection took place between June and July 2021. Information was also provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform (MAAR) and several other relevant ministries and state bodies as well as by provincial departments of agriculture.

    A joint FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Mission (CFSAM) visited the Syrian Arab Republic between 25 June and 19 July 2018 to estimate crop production and to assess the overall food security situation. On arrival in the country, the international members of the CFSAM team spent five days in Damascus prior to going to the field. During that time, they held meetings with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform (MAAR) and a number of other relevant ministries and state bodies of the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic. Following two weeks of data collection in the field in six governorates, the CFSAM team returned to Damascus to be briefed by MAAR officials who had collected further data independently in all governorates, and, most importantly, in governorates that the international team had been unable to visit. This was followed by a second round of meetings with the main technical directorates of MAAR. Prior to departure from the country, the Mission briefed the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform on its main findings.

    A joint FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Mission (CFSAM) visited the Syrian Arab Republic between 8 June and 4 July 2019 to estimate crop production and to assess the country’s overall food-security situation. On arrival in the country, the international members of the CFSAM team spent three days in Damascus prior to going to the field. During that time, joined by a small number of national FAO and WFP staff, they held meetings with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform (MAAR) and several other relevant ministries and state bodies of the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic. The team, consisting of national and international staff, then spent three weeks in the field collecting data and observing the agricultural and food-security situation in nine of the country’s 14 governorates. In Hama Governorate the team met national staff from two governorates, Raqqa and Idleb, which it was unable to visit for security reasons, to discuss the situation in those governorates. On return to Damascus the CFSAM team held meetings with the agricultural directors of Quneitra and Sweida, the two remaining governorates that it was unable to visit. The team also discussed its field findings and observations with the principal technical staff of MAAR. Prior to departure from the country, the Mission briefed the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform on its main findings.
