No results found.Heavy monsoon rainfall, coupled with rising water levels in the three major river basins and hilly areas upstream, have led to major flooding in northern, north-eastern and south-eastern Bangladesh. Initially, the Forecast-based Financing Working Group predicted that five districts of Bangladesh would be affected, however, the situation is much more severe and a further deterioration is expected over the coming days. Food security and livelihoods in the Country have already been heavily impacted. There has been widespread damage, including to agricultural land and flood protection infrastructure, disrupting agricultural production. Furthermore, there have been severe losses of crops, poultry, livestock and fisheries, as well as major constraints to market access and food price fluctuations. Reduced employment opportunities, due to disruptions in food value chains, are also limiting income and the purchasing power of vulnerable households. Many households have already adopted negative coping mechanisms, such as selling their livestock below market price and eating fewer meals. This will further increase poverty levels. The severe monsoon floods this year are further exacerbating the humanitarian situation in a country already facing other emergencies, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Rohingya refugee crisis in Cox’s Bazar and the recent Cyclone Amphan. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is implementing humanitarian response activities to strengthen the resilience of agricultural livelihoods and protect the productive assets of vulnerable households affected by severe monsoon flooding in 2020. -

No results found.Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO to mitigate the adverse impacts of two waves of devastating flash floods (May–June 2022) on the livelihoods and food security of vulnerable farming and fishing households. With Belgium’s generous support, FAO will provide 11 200 flood-affected farming and fishing households (56 000 people) with time-critical production inputs. The planned emergency assistance packages will enable the affected communities to restore their livelihoods, and increase crop and aquaculture production. The Central Emergency Response Fund will complement this project by funding interventions to support the livestock sector. This document provides a brief description of the current context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of flood-affected communities. -

No results found.Severe monsoon weather conditions since mid-June 2022 have disrupted the lives and livelihoods of 33 million people in Pakistan, mainly located in rural areas. Rainfalls were significantly higher than the national 30-year average, leading to devastating floods and landslides that wiped out agricultural lands, livestock assets, forests and critical agricultural infrastructure. The climate-induced disaster struck rural communities amid growing economic and food security challenges, compounding their vulnerabilities and exhausting their resilience. Rural communities, who represent 80 percent of the poorest people in Pakistan and depend on agriculture and livestock keeping for their livelihoods, were among the hardest hit by the disaster, especially in Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab provinces. The document provides an overview of the impact of the disaster on agricultural livelihoods and food security as well as FAO's planned response and funding requirements.
