The executive summary illustrates the main messages of the document entitled "Peste des Petits Ruminants Global Eradication Programme (2017-2021". The five year Peste des Petits Ruminant Global Eradication Programme (PPR-GEP) highlights the technical and policy tools foreseen as appropriate to lay the foundation for and commencement of PPR eradication by reducing the prevalence of PPR in currently infected countries. The programme will also develop capacity for non-infected countries to demonstrate the absence of PPR Virus leading towards official endorsement of PPR free status by the OIE. During its course the programme will strengthen na tional Veterinary Service that are the key players in the successful implementation of the PPR-GEP. When appropriate, the programme will also support reducing the prevalence of other prioritized small ruminant diseases if it helps in the implementation of the PPR-GEP.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious disease infecting wild and domestic small ruminants, which was first reported in 1942 in Côte d’Ivoire. Some 5.4 billion people live in affected areas, the majority of them among the world’s poorest livestock farmers. This disease is particularly relevant for Africa, where 33.8 percent of global small ruminants are reared. Thankfully, PPR is readily diagnosed and a reliable, inexpensive and high-quality vaccine is available to immunize animals. FAO and OIE began a global coordinated effort in 2015 to wipe out the disease by 2030. Stepping up this initiative will advance the PPR global eradication programme in Africa and ensure coordinated implementation.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a destructive, fast spreading viral disease that kills sheep and goats (small ruminants) and devastates livelihoods throughout most of Africa, the Middle East, West, Central and South Asia, and most recently East Asia. The PPR situation is dynamic and threatening. In 2016, the disease was reported for the first time in Georgia and Mongolia. FAO and OIE, in consultation with key stakeholders, developed a five-year Global Eradication Programme 2017-2021.
