Abstract

Smallholder farmers in Uganda are increasingly vulnerable to risks associated with changing weather patterns. Agriculture index insurance products are increasingly using satellite and other technology to support family farmers. This webinar will share the experiences from the SUM-Africa project, which realized provision of satellite data drought index insurance to protect smallholder farmers. The webinar will focus on the technological aspects of drought index insurance as well as on the challenges of scaling up microinsurance, lessons learned, successes and the commercial future of agriculture index insurance in Uganda.

  • Eleni Vakaki

    Eleni Vakaki has a Masters in Geomatic Engineering and Planning from ETH Zurich, with a focus on remote sensing. She is working for EARS B.V., in the Netherlands, on the design and monitoring of index insurance products in several African countries using mainly EARS Relative Evapotranspiration dataset. Among her responsibilities is also the modelling and evaluation of basis risk and the investigation of the suitability of various satellite data sources for index insurance products.
