PARAGUAY soybean export taxation: A bill aimed at promoting domestic production of higher-value added soymeal and soyoil via differential export taxation has been voted down by the countrys Lower House after having passed the Senate (see also MPPU Dec12). Reportedly, lawmakers were afraid that the powerful multinational companies controlling domestic crush and trade would pass on the extra cost to the small local growers, eventually discouraging domestic production. The draft bill had also contemplated taxation of wheat, maize and sunflower exports.
