Cotton
Studies identified poor soil management as one of the major bottlenecks for the development of the organic cotton sector as it leads to poor quality of the organic cotton. Therefore, an Experiential Learning Methodology to improve organic soil management was developed in collaboration with the Italian Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification (ICEA), BioRe, one of the global organic cotton farming pioneers and FiBL, an organic research institute in Switzerland.

Cotton and cassava: seed systems and GAP
FAO undertook two review studies to identify key constraints for poor access to quality cotton seed and cassava planting materials by smallholder farmers. The studies identified success factors that characterise effective seed models in the region. The studies were presented at a regional stakeholder workshop organized in September 2009 in Zambia for representatives of cotton and cassava producer organizations from Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The objective of the workshop was to assess capacities for implementing GAP and conservation agriculture among smallholder farmers.
