Improving production technologies with the Integrated Production and Pest Management approach

Agro-Eco System Analysis at a Farm Field School in Mali

Integrated Production and Pest Management (IPPM) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) have the potential to protect and increase farmers’ income through increased yields and reduced production costs, while maintaining their natural resource base and health. Furthermore, through crop diversification farmers’ vulnerability may be reduced. The production of safe and sustainable products may increase access to markets.

To train farmers on IPPM and GAP, FAO is implementing a Farmer Field School programme in West Africa funded by other donors. The AAACP funded training of thousands of farmers and trainers and sensitization activities in collaboration with this programme and its partners. This programme provides capacity building for cotton-cereal-livestock mixed farming systems and for horticulture producers. The programme is implemented in Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Benin and coordinated by local consultants under the technical guidance of FAO.

In Central Africa the AAACP supports the use of integrated nutrient management system (IPNIS).

In East and Southern Africa organic cotton production is supported in Tanzania, a seed systems review was undertaken for the cotton sector in Southern Africa and a workshop on GAP was organized.
