To assist the strategy formulation process, FAO commissioned a paper to review experiences of linking smallholders to export markets in the Caribbean Basin. Opportunities and threats arising from the strategy of non-traditional agricultural export promotion are identified. The paper includes three commodity chain case studies.

Cassava in Guyana
A joint FAO-ITC consultation was undertaken in Guyana resulting in recommendations for actions. In follow-up, FAO organised field work with the National Agricultural research Institute and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA). This resulted in a paper on the market for cassava in Guyana. A second paper focused on risk management (see key area 6).
