Pro-poor agricultural development in Zambia: what role for social protection?

Within the Social Protection week (16-20 May) organized by the Government of Zambia and development partners, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Zambia facilitated a one-day event on “Pro-poor agricultural development: agricultural interventions and the complementary role of social protection”.

Participants included the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare, civil society organizations, research institutions and development partners involved in supporting the development of small family farmers in Zambia.

The event focused on identifying options for bringing together agriculture and social protection in Zambia to support agricultural transformation and combat poverty and hunger among small family farmers. The event received good coverage on two national newspapers (Times of Zambia and Zambia Daily Mail) and the FAO Representative George Okech appeared on national television.
