Objective:

To improve households’ food security and livelihoods, including displaced people, returnees, host families and families with a member affected by Ebola.

Key partners:

Ministry of Agriculture.

Beneficiaries reached:

4 092 households.

Activities implemented:
  • Distributed a total of 97 tonnes of quality crop seeds (maize and beans) for food production to 4 092 beneficiary households.
  • Provided 4 092 households with vouchers each valued at XOF 39 600 (about USD 30) to purchase 15 kg of beans and 10 kg of maize from quality seed producers at input trade fairs organized under the project.
  • Established 80 Village Savings and Loan Associations of market gardeners with an average of 20 households in the territories of Irumu and Mambasa, Ituri province.
  • Distributed a total of 66 kg of seeds for market gardening (amaranth, cabbage, eggplant and leek) to 1 652 beneficiary households.
  • Distributed small breeding animals (3 800 guinea pigs and 2 400 rabbits) to 1 250 households in the territory of Mambasa.
  • Provided unconditional cash transfers of USD 15/household to allow beneficiaries to undertake the construction of hutches; a total of USD 18 660 was transferred directly to beneficiary households through the Trust Merchant Bank.
Impact:
  • Cultivated 3 675 ha of crops for an estimated production of 2 940 tonnes of food (1 681 tonnes of maize and 1 259 tonnes of beans), equivalent to about 1 176 meals/household or food stocks for about six months.
  • Cultivated about 8 ha of land for a production of 872 tonnes of vegetables (a total of 87.2 tonnes of fresh vegetables/month or an average of 53 kg of vegetables/household/month), equivalent to a total of 396 364 meals for a whole month or 119 daily rations/household.
  • Improved and diversified beneficiaries’ sources of income and access to other foods (meat, fish, oil).
  • Contributed to improving the food security and nutrition of beneficiaries, enabling them to create food stocks.
  • Created safer and more sustainable economic opportunities.
