Restoring fisheries livelihoods and improving resilience in the Philippines

Restoring fisheries livelihoods and improving resilience in coastal regions severely affected by Typhoon Haiyan

To restore the livelihoods of vulnerable fishing households, reduce their reliance on food aid, enable them to resume fisheries-related activities and improve their resilience to future threats.

Key partners:

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and Local Government Units.

Beneficiaries reached:

4 574 households (approximately 22 870 people).

Activities implemented:
  • Provided post-harvest kits to 1 000 households (500 fish processors and 500 fish vendors and traders).
  • Trained 1 527 people in Region IVB (including the 1 000 recipients of post-harvest kits) on post-harvest fisheries product handling and development, fish and fishery value-added products and community-based enterprise development.
  • Trained 521 people on food safety compliance, value-added products and community-based enterprise development in Region VIII.
  • Trained 123 people on the management of fish-landing sites funded by BFAR.
  • Trained 839 people on safety at sea and disaster preparedness in Regions IVB and VIII.
  • Trained 240 people on the ecosystem approach to fisheries management in Region IVB.
  • Provided training on fishery law enforcement to 217 people in Region VIII, who were subsequently deputized as fish wardens.
  • Trained 481 people on community-based fisheries management in Region VIII.
  • Distributed kits for the rehabilitation and demarcation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in 14 barangays.
  • Trained 626 people on the management of MPAs.
  • Distributed 9 700 information, education and communication materials.
  • Contributed to the sustainable development of fisheries in the targeted areas.
  • Restored and enhanced the production capacity of fish vendors, traders and processors through the distribution of post-harvest and processing materials.
  • Facilitated the adoption of improved value-adding, post-harvest, marketing, business development and water safety and rescue practices.
  • Helped beneficiaries to reduce spoilage, add value to their products (thereby increasing their income) and increase fishers’ safety at sea.
  • Strengthened local capacity in the management of MPAs, contributing to increased production of fish and other marine resources.
  • Raised awareness among national policymakers on the importance of investing in fisheries resource management, livelihood assistance and continuous capacity building.
