Objective:

To curb the spread of the desert locust by sharing and applying, through South-South Triangular Cooperation, new, effective and low-cost technologies, techniques and proved solutions.

Beneficiaries reached:

Desert locust-affected farmers, agropastoralists and pastoralists and national authorities responsible for desert locust surveillance and control.

Activities implemented:
  • Supported the procurement and distribution of 72 000 litres of pesticides for use in ground and aerial control operations, enabling the treatment of 72 000 ha (Ethiopia).
  • Procured 65 ultra-low volume (ULV) vehicle-mounted sprayers, six laptops and 71 smartphones for use by the Plant Protection Organization (Islamic Republic of Iran).
  • Hired vehicles to support survey operations in 16 counties and supported the procurement of 50 000 litres of pesticides, used to treat 91 332 ha (Kenya).
  • Procured kits to test exposure to organophosphates to ensure safety in control operations: three sets of Test-mate ChE and ten sets of AChE Assay kits (Kenya).
  • Provided 5 750 bags of fertilizer to 12 000 households and 100 sachets of watermelon seeds to 600 households, and trained beneficiaries on the proper use of their inputs (Kenya).
  • Procured and distributed ten single-cabin vehicles for use by the Department of Plant Protection in control operations (Pakistan).
  • Provided 15 ULV knapsack sprayers and three kits of spare parts; 500 personal protective equipment kits; and a Toyota Land Cruiser for use in control operations (Uganda).
  • Supported the cost of transporting 50 000 litres of pesticides (Uganda).
Impact:
  • Protected cropping areas and pastureland, contributing towards increased food security and assisting in the recovery of desert-locust affected livelihoods.
  • Strengthened national capacities in desert locust monitoring, rapid response and safety in pesticide use.
  • Promoted global and regional coordination and strategic partnerships for emergency preparedness and response in the fight against desert locust.
  • Enhanced advocacy and resource mobilization to address agriculture during disaster and crisis situations.
  • Contributed towards protecting the livelihoods of farmers, agropastoralists and pastoralists in desert locust-affected areas.
