East Africa and Yemen region free from Desert Locust

Starting in late 2019, the largest upsurge of desert locusts in living memory darkened the skies of East Africa and Yemen, threatening to wipe out crops and pastures in a region already beset by hunger. Affected countries had little capacity to manage the massive invasion of the world's most destructive migratory pest. FAO has been fighting desert locust outbreaks for 75 years. With generous donor support we procured equipment, supplies and aircraft, and trained national response teams. East Africa and Yemen battled to contain the locust upsurge. After a long-fought campaign, the region is now locust free.
